I became interested in time lapse photography several years ago, as the technology for stitching the photos together became cheaper and more accessible. Typically, it is about finding an interesting scene, setting up the camera on a tripod, and having the shutter fire away every few seconds over the period of an hour or so.
I found a new dimension in time lapse watching the intro sequence for House of Cards. The camera was panned over the duration of the time lapse, producing an interesting effect. There were rigs for purchase but they were expensive and as an outdoor photographer, the rig needed to be light so it could be backpacked. So, time to go build one...
This project introduced me to a number of new things, including 3D printing tools and community, Arduino micro-controllers, and some good resources for mechanical systems.
